About 45–55 English words, or two to three short sentences. Short, common words give you more words per 300 characters than long technical terms — a sentence using only one-syllable words may fit 60+ words, while a sentence of 8-letter words may only fit 30.
300 characters is the cap on a Google Business Profile 'from the business' description, several marketplace product blurbs, classified-ad headlines, and longer ad-copy variants. It's also a common 'short description' size on grant and admissions portals where 250 feels too tight and 500 too long.
Need a different limit? Use 60 characters for SEO titles, 150 characters for mobile-safe meta descriptions, 155 characters for desktop meta descriptions, 250 characters for short answers, 280 characters for tweets, or the SEO meta checker for a live Google preview. For arbitrary text, the main character counter shows characters, words, and reading time.
