250 characters is a common "short answer" size on forms, marketplace listings, ad networks, and admissions or grant portals. It's longer than a typical SEO meta description (150–160) but well below a full tweet (280) or a paragraph. Aiming for ≤ 250 forces you to keep the message tight while still allowing two full sentences.
About 38–45 English words. Structure tip: lead with the most important phrase (so it's not cut off if the platform truncates), state the unique value in the middle, and end with a soft call to action or context. Example (210 chars): "Free online discount calculator: enter the original price and percent off to see the sale price and savings instantly. Works for 10%, 20%, 30%, 50% off and any custom percentage. No signup, no install."
Need a different limit? Use 60 characters for SEO titles, 150 characters for mobile-safe meta descriptions, 155 characters for desktop meta descriptions, 280 characters for tweets, or the SEO meta checker for a live Google preview. For arbitrary text, the main character counter shows characters, words, and reading time.
